Friends, Family, Fun, and… Field? – Maxwell Night

by Patrick S Lee, edited by Nina Nim

Do you like friends? Family? Playing sports effectively blind? If you answered yes to all of the above, you surely came to this semester’s Maxwell Night! AAA’s Internal Relations Committee (IRC) hosted their semesterly inter-family sports competition not at their usual venue of the RSF, but at the appropriately named Maxwell Family Field. Games played during the event were kickball, capture the flag, and waterless water polo. Care was taken to ensure that every game focused on cooperative team play to promote family pride and unity.

Chinpangzees!

Parents came to Maxwell Family Field early at 6:45PM, a full forty-five minutes prior to the scheduled start of the event, in order to set up and ensure things went smoothly. Unfortunately, not even Grandpa Josh could have anticipated being unable to turn on the lights that were supposed to illuminate the field while all of the kids were busy taking each other down in the series of planned games. However, being the wily and wise old man that he is, Grandpa Josh took care of business by organizing a massive impromptu game of capture the flag after the first round of games proved to be incredibly difficult in the dark evening sky.

NC-17!

Unfortunately, things became a bit too hectic with so many people playing one game at once in the dark, so teams were sent off mid-game to round two. Luckily, the lights were eventually turned on and teams were able to prove which family was truly a force to be reckoned with. Of course, there could only be one winning team… Congratulations, Eric Shin! While every family tried their best, Eric Shin clearly rose up to the challenge and proved that they were bigger and better than everyone else. Meanwhile, SNM, who tried desperately to overcome !She-Neal’s losing streak last semester came up short, but ended up winning the award for best sportsmanship, which they, of course, celebrated with their hilariously inappropriate family chant.

Ultimately, despite the rocky start, Maxwell Night was a rousing success that tied together not only members of individual families, but all of the families as well. Grandpa Josh and the parents of Eric Shin, SNM, Trifecta, Pandamonia, Chinpangzee, and NC-17 should be very proud.
